Expressionist textured painting inspired by Japanese woodblock print colors of the Kabuki Theater. The work is signed, titled, and dated by the artist. It is framed in a silver frame with a burlap matte. The back has a Makler Gallery tag with the artist name, title, and date.

Artist Biography

Born June 13, 1910, in Appleton, MN; died December 12, 1973, in a car crash near Como, Italy; son of William Henry and Bertha (Beckman) Christ-Janer; married Virginia Morgan Carpenter, May 28, 1941. Education: St. Olaf College, B.A., 1931; attended Art Institute of Chicago, 1931-32, and Yale University, Divinity School, 1932-34; Yale University, M.F.A., 1935; Harvard University, Fogg Museum, additional study, 1939-40. Military/Wartime Service: U.S. Army, 1941-42. Memberships: College Art Association, American Federation of Arts, Century Association, Phi Beta Kappa. Career: Stephens College, Columbia, MO, instructor in art, 1934-36, chair of department, 1936-42, director of summer art school, 1936-39; Michigan State College (now University), East Lansing, chair of art department, 1942-45; Cranbrook Academy of Art, Bloomfield Hills, MI, director of museum and library, 1945-47; University of Chicago, Chicago, IL, director of humanities development, 1947-51; New York University, New York, NY, director of humanities education, 1951-55; Pennsylvania State University, University Park, professor of art and dean of College of Arts, 1955-58; Pratt Institute School of Art, Brooklyn, NY, dean of art school, 1958-69; University of Georgia, Athens, Fuller E. Callaway Professor, 1970-73. Visiting professor, Northwestern University, summer, 1937. Work has been exhibited at Museum of Modern Art, Brooklyn Museum, Philadelphia Academy, Art Institute of Chicago, Detroit Institute of Arts. Works in Museum of Modern Art, Brooklyn Museum, Rochester Museum, Staten Island Museum, and University of Chicago. Member of President's Committee for Kennedy Cultural Center. Awards: Guggenheim award, 1951, 1961; recipient of over twenty awards for his artwork.
