In “A Human Day,” a solo show dedicated to the work of contemporary multidisciplinary artist Benji Stiles, we explore a survey of his diverse work including objects, paintings, videos, and installations from over the past 5 years.

With a unique and distinctive style that combines pastel hues with bold, abstract compositions, Stiles has garnered recognition throughout the Houston art scene. While the majority of the work in this show is recent, “A Human Day” is a testament to Stiles’ ever evolving mastery of color, form, and emotion. Featuring a wide array of large-scale canvases and smaller, more intimate objects and installations, the collection invites the viewer to immerse themselves in Benji’s vision.

Born in New Orleans, Robert Benjamin Stiles (Benji) is a multidisciplinary artist and educator who lives and works in Houston. He holds a BA from the University of St. Thomas, with a major in Art History and a minor in Studio Art and is currently a MFA candidate at MICA (Maryland Institute College of Art). His work ranges from non-representational painting focusing on diverse mark making and color theory, to conceptual sculpture, assemblage, and installation work using a variety of media including historical and found objects.

Reeves Art & Design is proud to present “1YRLTR,” a group show featuring works by Houston-based arts group BIGBOND, showcasing works in a range of media, including painting, sculpture, and mixed media.

“1YRLTR,” said “One Year Later,” explores themes of time, growth, observation, and reflection. Join us as we explore how the artists of BIGBOND navigate personal, social, emotional, and environmental challenges they have experienced since they began working together one year ago, in the fall of 2022, meeting through the MFAH Glassell BLOCK program.

BIGBOND participating artists Vernon Caldera, Alexandra Constantinou, Marina Fernandez, Robert Fox, Holly Josey, Suzette Schutze, Margaret O’Brien-Nelson, Lia Rodi, Chet Urban, and Michelle Whitney are a loosely organized but tightly-knit group of Houston-based artists who engage each other in critical thought, share ideas from their readings and writings, go see art, support other local artists, and fan each other’s creative flames with the purpose of strengthening their individual artistic output while nurturing bonds within Houston’s art community.

Reeves Art & Design is proud to present “Friend of a Friend,” a group show curated by Houston native Vincent Di Nguyen. The exhibition showcases over twenty different artists from around the country and features a diverse range of art forms and mediums, including painting, sculpture, mixed media, and digital art. “Friend of a Friend” celebrates the connections we make through art and the power of collaboration in the creative process.

Participating artists hail from California to New York and include Natalia Arbelaez, Austyn Taylor, Ryan Travis Christian, Mike Lee, Judith Supine, James Jean, Mark Dean Veca, Taylor Lee, Ron DeFelice, Wendy Park, Jake Clark, Jeffry Mitchell, AP Shrewsbury, Taylor McKimens, Peter Nguyen, Robert Mackenzie, and Dan Mandelbaum. Nguyen, an accomplished artist himself, is excited to introduce these talented artists to the Houston community.

“Friend of a Friend” will also feature work by several established and emerging local artists, such as Ben Peterson, Mark Flood, Yeonsoo Kim, and Jihye Han. Yeonsoo and Jihye have both recently been artists in residence at Houston Center for Contemporary Craft. The exhibition will be on view May 12th, 2023 through June 3rd, 2023. The opening reception, which will feature several of the artists in attendance, will take place on May 12th, from 6:00 PM to 9:00 PM.

In his show, “Perfect Day,” Max Kremer explores the intricacies of individuality and community through the lens of landscape painting. He suggests that one might just as easily think about the paintings as portraits because they are a commentary on the agency of the land.

Kremer describes each scene's individuality by using subtle or intense variations in the brush strokes. The perspectives of the paintings play an equally important role as it defines the scope of the subjects. While each scene is viewed from a set scale, the paintings are just as much about what is deeper within and beyond the frame. The exposed primed canvas and limited color palette emphasizes this aspect by tying the paintings together. Viewers can interpret the scenes independently and as parts of a larger collective, making the boundaries between the subjects less definitive. The implied space, ambiguous colors, and undefined perspectives make the paintings purposefully difficult to contextualize so that the viewer can more easily bring their own perspective into the environment.

The opening reception will be held on April 7th, 2023 from 6:00 PM – 9:00 PM in conjunction with the partnering exhibition—"Chris Bexar: Some Images May Be Disturbing.”

In “Some Images May Be Disturbing,” Houston-based artist Chris Bexar looks to examine the dynamic relationship between our virtual and physical landscapes. In our digital environment, there is a fractal relationship between tiny and enormous structures. Everything looks the same. Blow up the components of a PC, and they look like the Houston skyline. Take an aerial photo of the Metropolis, and it looks like the guts of your iPhone.

By exploring the concept of landscape in a nostalgic way, Bexar focuses on the idea of virtual space and more specifically on spaces where anyone can do anything at any given moment. His photos establish a link between the landscape's reality and that imagined by its conceiver. His works focus on questions that determine our existence. These meticulously planned works resound and resonate with images culled from the fantastical realm of imagination. Rather than presenting a factual reality, an illusion is fabricated to conjure the realms of our imagination.

Contributing to the vibrant arts community in Houston, "Visual Language & Catharsis" will exhibit the recent works of four mid-career painters, originally from NYC, who have relocated their working studios to Texas.

Known for his use of irreverent humor, political commentary, and a variety of mediums, Mark Flood's work provokes audiences to question the established art world and cultural norms. His work is not for the faint of heart, but for those who crave a thought-provoking experience. Whether you love it or hate it, one thing is for certain: Mark Flood's art will leave a lasting impression.

"Mark Flood- A Guide for Nude Investors" will be on view from March 3rd - March 25th with the opening reception on March 3rd from 6 - 9 PM. The show retraces ten years of the artist's sputtering attempts to incorporate digital printing into his art.

The Rundown: For this exhibition, we return to our eclectic roots with a show that incorporates everything but the kitchen sink. Bringing together work from over 25 Texas artists, we aim to take a step back from traditional curation with this show and simply allow our clients to experience a plethora of art and explore their own tastes and preferences.

For this December exhibition at Reeves Art + Design, Texas artist DUAL looks to transport the viewer from the urban streets of Houston to the lush jungle of the Amazon. Debuting sculptures, paintings, and video installations, his work explores not only the rainforest habitat, but the animal inhabitants that populate the environment as well. His bold lines and fresh colors are a break from the everyday monotony of life in the city. Through a blending of an urban subculture aesthetic, with the rich diversity of the rainforest, DUAL plans to give the viewer the sense that the gallery has been overgrown by the jungle environment. A fixture in the Houston street art scene since 2005, DUAL has also pursued a Bachelor of Fine Arts with a concentration in painting, and his work has seen more than its fair share of gallery walls. DUAL has been featured in several exhibitions by some of the top names in the Houston art scene including Foltz Fine Art, Pablo Cardoza Fine Art, Colton & Farb Gallery, and Station Museum of Contemporary Art. He has had the opportunity to collaborate with a number of brands, labels, and charities including the Lebron James Family Foundation, Pabst Brewing Company, Boys & Girls Clubs of America, Houston Outlaws, Dickies Workwear, Vuse Vapes, Street Serpents Apparel, Sprite and more.

In Reeves Art + Design’s December show, Lost and Found, Russ Rubin aims to transport you to another dimension, where the pragmatic falls away and only an offbeat beauty and the thrill of escape remain. Stare into his vintage gilt portals and you’re absorbed into a symphony of muted desert hues and otherworldly landscapes begging the viewer’s exploration. Two light-up sculptures at human scale, collaborations with the Utah-based artist Sydney Smith, titled ‘Lost’ and ‘Found’, speak to a connection over a distance; togetherness and loneliness hand and hand, in painted-up cacti-promorphic figures each ogling the other across the great plain of the gallery floor. Perhaps the pièce de résistance, ‘Look Mommy’ is a hand-painted old motorcycle kiddie ride, the kind found outside 90s era supermarkets, set before a giant oval expanse laced with paths fiending for the next adventurer. By the time you hop on board and hit that blue button, you will have been fully launched into Russ’s dreamland, where all of this makes the best kind of bizarro sense and the lost feels closer to the found than ever.

Russ Rubin (b. 1983) is a painter of abstract landscapes from the exotic woods of New Jersey. His work has been collected across the US, Europe, and Asia, acknowledged by the MOMA, acquired by the Jeff Koons Collection, shown at Young Soy (Hong Kong), Mark Borghi, Ground Floor, Field Projects, OnePiece, and the YouTube Space in New York, and with Brushes With Greatness in London. A featured artist at Affordable Art Fair NY (Fall 2022), his new series ‘Get Lost’ debuts at Scope Art Fair at this year’s Art Week Miami. ‘Lost + Found’ is his debut show with Reeves Art + Design.

Reeves Art + Design is excited to announce their November exhibition titled, An Analog Cork Floating on a Digital Sea: A David Adickes Retrospective. This show opens on November 10th and runs through November 30th, 2022. It can be said that viewing David Adickes’ art is nothing short of an historic experience. A prominent member of the Houston art scene since the 1950s, he is always ready to share one of his stories or a quippy joke. While his most visible works are his giant sculptures spread throughout Houston, Adickes has spent the last seven decades producing paintings that blend a classic style with a touch of whimsy. Now in his mid-90s, Adickes often describes himself as an “analog cork floating on a digital sea trying to find land.” Even though he might view himself as analog, his body of work has proven to transcend the test of time and speak to the hearts of many generations. Join us this November as we explore highlights from David’s monumental career spanning from his earliest still-life pieces to his contemporary figurative portraits.

Reeves Art + Design, in conjunction with a roster of contemporary Texas artists, presents Reeves Art x Design. In this group show we explore furniture and craftsmanship as an extension of the art making process. Each artist was requested to either paint a custom-made furniture piece or propose a unique design all their own. Through this collaborative effort, we look to blur the line between fine art and function. Displayed with other examples of their more traditional work, this show highlights the variety of ways that art can be incorporated into design.

Featured artists include Moises Villafuerte, Shelbi Nichol, Nathan Sing, David Potwin, David Hardaker, Mario Kazaz, Frank Trocino, Anthony Reans, and Matthew Reeves.

Saralene Tapley is an Irish American artist living in Houston, Texas who looks to capture the human experience through her work. In this retrospective exhibition, we explore her evolution as an artist through portraiture and still lives.
