Artist Biography

I am passionate about Food in my life and in my artwork. I had a long career in Food and Nutrition before transitioning to becoming an artist specializing in Food-based artwork. I have a BS in Dietetics from Ohio University 1974, a Master's Degree in Nutrition from the University of Cincinnati, 1975 and a Certificate of Fine Arts in Painting from Glassell School of Art in 2012. Food is a basic human necessity but its' significance transcends beyond mere sustenance. . The taste or smell of food is a universal emotion across all nationalities and cultures. Food is a symbol of hospitality, social status, and is a source of joy and celebration. We all connect with Food through breaking bread with others, sharing holiday meals, on dates, business lunches, and more. My artwork deals with the theme of culture. Food maps who we are and where we've come from. Much of my artwork is a celebration of exciting Food. I often apply hand carved, layered, and painted foam core board to my work. It adds a sculptural element and dimensionality. I often use a pastry bag to apply garnishes and extruded, defined paint applications. I have invented my own special techniques for making my painted and collaged baked goods look so real that the viewer is tempted to reach into the piece for some pastry. I make berries using layers of painted foam core board and glue, chocolate curls of paper, crushed painted glass for cake crumbs and chopped nuts, cherries from notched styrofoam balls with string, and much more. I find inspiration everywhere, in shadows, from gorgeous arrays of food, colorful gardens, and interesting people. I start with an idea and let the piece evolve organically from inspiration to full-blown creation of multi-layered design and fantasy.
