David Lozano received his BFA at The University of Houston in 1999. While studying painting, he worked with Frank Stella’s crew to produce his permanent painted installations for the Moore’s Opera House on The University’s Campus. Lozano also was hired by The Museum of Contemporary Art, Houston, to coordinate a symposium “Why Paint,” that was held in conjunction with Rice University. These experiences helped shaped his studio practice with a new found focus on painting. Lozano moved to Chicago and received his MFA from the University of Illinois, in 2003, with Kerry James Marshall as his advisor. A year later, he was picked up by one of Chicago’s pioneering River North galleries, Zolla/Lieberman Gallery, and began exhibiting there regularly. His work has also been featured in numerous solo and group exhibitions including a solo show at Hyde Park Art Center in Illinois and a group show curated by Kerry James Marshall at Koplin Del Rio Gallery in Culver City, CA. Lozano is currently an adjunct assistant professor at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. He has received numerous grants in both Illinois and in Texas, including the Joan Mitchell Foundation Painters & Sculptors Grant (2004) and Chicago’s Community Arts Assistance Grants (in 2015, 2016, and 2017). His work has been reviewed in several papers and periodicals, including The Chicago Tribune, LA Times, and The Chicago Sun Times.
