Artist Biography

Clay artist Monti Mayrend began his ceramic studies in Michigan thirty-five years ago under the tutelage of Robert Piepenburg. Much of his earlier work centered around traditional and non traditional raku techniques with some exploration of under-fired electric oxidation firing. In later years he's concentrated on even more primitive techniques using little or no glaze in various pit-firing modes allowing combustibles like dung and sawdust to produce color and surface effect. He produces mainly vessel and box forms but is currently working on more two dimensionally oriented wall objects. Additional activities include raising a 6 year-old and teaching hatha yoga. Monti has exhibited work in the following Texas venues: 18 Hands Gallery (Houston), Foelber Gallery (Houston); Copper Shade Tree (Round Top).
