"Most of my life has been lived in structured environments, whether school, military service, or the business world. My current interest in painting, and in particular abstract painting, is something I’m exploring that’s totally different from my past pursuits. My early works were representational. As I’ve progressed, the paintings have evolved to a looser and more abstract style and my current work explores pure abstraction. The unstructured nature of abstract painting gives me the freedom to explore my creative self."
Gerald Syler was born April 6, 1942, in Sherman, Texas. Upon graduation from Texas A & M University, Gerald served as an officer in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War. After completing his duty, he returned to Texas A & M where he received a master's degree. Gerald spent his entire career with Shell Oil Company, retiring in 2000. He made the most of retirement by following his many passions and interests. Syler passed away in 2016.
