About

Gorgeous teak 'Bwana' chair by Finn Juhl for France & Sons in original black leather. Imported by John Stewart. There's a little tear in the back but in otherwise nice vintage condition. The "Bwana" chair, designed in 1962 by Finn Juhl for France and Sons, was originally intended as a kind of updated "Chieftain" chair. As we know now, both designs Stand besides each other in equal quality. The Bwana features superb wood details and joints which Finn Juhl is known for. The carved teak, the triangular section of teak at the head rest which supports the top of the back, and the solid circular "pommel" hand-rests, are particularly distinctive details. The chair features the original black leather upholstery with a rich patina. The "Bwana" chair, just as other designs by Juhl, bears traits of traditional African art and European modernist sculpture. Finn Juhl (1912-1989), born in Denmark, planned on becoming an art historian when he was young. His father decided it would be a better career move if he went to become an architect. After his architecture degree Juhl worked for ten years with Vilhelm Lauritzen. At the age of 33 Finn Juhl opened his own furniture design practice. In the 1940s he designed a number of creations that regenerated Danish furniture design, and broke with the established furniture tradition. Juhl is known as the one of the most important pioneers of Danish design. He was in fact the first Danish furniture designer to gain widespread international recognition. his work was vital to spreading the “Danish Modern” concept around the world. His designs are reknown for being exquisitely elegant, refined up until the smallest detail and extremely well executed.
