Artist Biography

Michael Heinrich Salomon Gottlieb, aka Aram, was born in 1908 in Austria. Aram studied painting at the School of Fine Arts in Berlin, and worked as a theater set designer with Brecht. When the National Socialist Party got to power in 1933, Aram left Germany for Tel Aviv. He arrived in Israel illegally and worked at the Ohel theatre in Tel Aviv. In 1942, he married the dancer Paula Padani in Tel Aviv. Their daughter Gabrielle was born in 1951. In 1946, they moved to Paris where they became friends with the artists living in Montparnasse, such as Kisling, Chana Orloff, Natalia Goncharova, Larionov, Zadkine, Picasso, etc. In 1962, he was naturalized as a French citizen and was awarded the Médaille de la Ville de Paris. He died in Paris in 1998.
