Artist Biography

Paulo Laport was born in Rio de Janeiro in 1951. The artist began his art studies by taking engraving classes at Museu de Arte Moderna do Rio de Janeiro between 1967 and 1968. Later on, in 1980, he studied at the Arts Students League of New York and at the Pratt Institute. Among his main solo exhibitions, stand out shows at: Gravura Brasileira Gallery (1981), Galeria Montesanti (1986), Paço Imperial do Rio de Janeiro (1995) and GB Arte (2000). In 2012, he showed his work at Marcia Barroso do Amaral’s Art Gallery, in 2013 he had a show at Edelman Arts Gallery, in New York. He took part in the 1st and 4th Salão Nacional de Artes Plásticas at MAM-RJ, in 1978 and 1981. In 1984, he partook in the exhibition Velha Mania: Desenho EAV, at Escola de Artes Visuais do Parque Laje. He was a part of group shows such as Galerie 1900-2000, in 1988, and Galerie Richard Leroy, in 1989, both in Paris. In 1991 in Switzerland, the artist took part in exhibitions such as Sélection FAE – Musée d’Art Contemporain de Lausanne and Galerie Faust, Geneva. In 1992, he showed his work at Galerie Lehmann, in Lausanne, Switzerland. From then on, he partook in several international European fairs. In 2018, Paulo Laport showed paintings made between 1992 and 2018 at Paço Imperial do Rio de Janeiro, with curatorship by Paulo Venancio Filho.
