Philip Renteria is and American artist who is known for Philip Renteria is and American artist who is known for using very limited means to create a great deal of impact. Working mainly with black ink and white paper, he applies caligraphic gestures - ranging from long rhythmic strokes to elegiac blobs - that are balanced with the mechanical precision of a constructivist. Color accents are occasional passages of red, but overall character is that of Japanese sumi, in which an expressive range of values and textures emerge from wet and dry brushwork in black ink. Renteria captures that refined sensitivity in a way that's entirely his own.
