Artist Biography

Taylor McKimens has been known for years as a painter of “American Life,” making large and narrative paintings that feature rural tableaus, economically marginalized people, and overlooked, often beautiful, details of the natural world and cultural debris. McKimens grew up in Winterhaven, CA, a small desert town on the Mexican border far from large museums and the deep European traditions of art they celebrate. McKimens learned to make art by looking at printed matter: the bumblebee on a Cheerios box, cartoons in the newspaper, comics, crummy illustrations with bad typography on Mexican products, the lines inside George Washington’s face on the dollar bill. He sees his graphic, pop roots as a strength and reflective of a very American story. McKimens has exhibited widely in international gallery and museum shows and has work in many prominent collections. His work has been presented at solo shows including Swapping Paint at Dio Horia, Mykonos, Greece (2016); Stoic Youth at The Hole, New York (2015); Perugi Arte Contemporanea, Padua, Italy (2013); When Things Get Back to Normal at Zürcher Gallery, Paris (2011); Bubblegum Cowboy and Sweet Dreams of Phoenix at LOYAL Gallery, Malmö, Sweden (2011, 2008), and The Drips at Clementine Gallery, New York (2006). He has participated in notable group exhibitions at The Hole in New York (2015, 2012, 2010); the Garage Center for Contemporary Culture in Moscow (2011); the Macro Museum in Rome (2009); and Deitch Projects in New York (2008, 2007, 2004). He has been the subject of stories in numerous publications, including Juxtapoz, Artdaily, Hyperallergic, and The New York Times. McKimens currently lives and works in Los Angeles.
