Naturalistic figurative painting of two young girls looking through family portraits. The work is beautifully painted with domestic iconography including the milk jug at the girl's feet and a shelf above the door with more jugs. The view gets a peak of one of the portraits when one of the girls holds it down at her side. On the back of the board are various stickers and a stamp on the wood. The wooden panel is framed in an elegant gold frame. The artist signed and dated in the bottom corner of the work.

Karl Rudolf Sohn (1845 - 1908) was the son of Düsseldorf landscape painter Karl Ferdinand Sohn and the brother of the genre painter Richard Sohn. After leaving school, he began in 1863 to study engineering at the Polytechnic in Karlsruhe, where he joined the fraternity Teutonia. In 1866 he completed his studies successfully, but never practiced this profession. Influenced by his father, from whom he also received his first art lessons, he dedicated himself to painting. He became a pupil of his cousin, the painter Wilhelm Sohn. Later he settled as a freelance artist in Munich. End of 1873 he moved in his hometown Dusseldorf. The following year he was appointed as a lecturer at the local art academy. At the age of nearly 63 years, the painter Karl Rudolf Sohn died on August 29, 1908 in Dusseldorf. His grave is located at the Düsseldorf North Cemetery.
