Artist Biography
Virginia Cobb is a contemporary artist who is a native Oklahoman who grew up in a family of artists, and has been actively involved in art throughout her life. She now lives outside of Santa Fe, NM, where she also has her studio, and teaches two workshops a year. She was elected to the American Watercolor Society in 1976, and later received a Dolphin Fellowship from that society. She is also a member of the National Academy of Design. Her watermedia paintings have been exhibited throughout the United States, Canada and Great Britain, and hang in many corporate and private settings. She believes that every painting is not a style of painting or a school of art--it is an attitude, a willingness to take risks, because there is no guarantee that a painting will turn out well. Her book, Discovering the Inner Eye: Experiments in Water Media (now out of print) is the result of years of teaching experimental workshops. She believes that every painting is an experiment. This four-part book concerns experimental painting not as a style but as an attitude, challenging the established rules. It is directed at releasing the artist's inner self to gain a deeper, more personal perception of the physical world. Illustrated demonstrations explore such techniques as laying color on color, alternating between opaque and dye colors for increased vibrancy, building undertextures with charcoal washes, inks, colored pencils and constructing a multi-layered surface with collage materials.
