Artist Biography
Born in Lockhart, Louisiana, David McGee currently resides in Houston, Texas. McGee received a BA from Prairie View A&M University, and since has become one of the most prolific and renowned painters in the Houston art scene and beyond. His paintings are the focus of several solo exhibitions at DiverseWorks and the Texas Gallery. McGee’s work is held in the collections of many prominent institutions including The Menil Collection, Museum of Fine Arts Houston, Rhode Island School of Design Museum, Addison Gallery, Dallas Museum of Art, and Harvard University Museums. He is the recipient of multiple prestigious grants from the Joan Mitchell Foundation, the Mid- America Arts Alliance, Texas Artists and Lawyers for the Arts, and the Houston Art Alliance. His work has also been featured in a variety of publications including The Village Voice, the Wall Street Journal, Art in America and ARTnews. Through thought-provoking paintings, McGee explores his role as a black, male artist in 21st century America. Challenging labels, his work combines racial stereotypes and legendary iconography from art history to comment on contemporary culture and his place within it.
